Game Overview

Wheel of Fortune on Game Boy came out in 1990 from GameTek, a time when licensed games were a huge part of the portable library. It was a straightforward adaptation, the kind of thing you'd play on a long car ride when you wanted something familiar and simple. The screen was small, the colors were shades of green, but it captured the basic rhythm of the TV show well enough for a quick puzzle fix.

You control the cursor to select letters or spin the wheel, trying to solve phrases one revealed character at a time. The main objective is to outscore one or two computer opponents by solving puzzles and earning cash from the wheel's multipliers. Key mechanics include spinning the digital wheel, which can land on cash values, bankrupt, or lose a turn spaces, and buying vowels to help complete phrases when you have enough money. The pacing is slow, dictated by the AI's sometimes bafflingly lucky guesses, and the difficulty comes more from random wheel misfortune than the puzzles themselves. It feels like a stripped-down, slightly clunky version of waiting for your turn to shout an answer at the television.
