Play World Cup Online
In World Cup, you control a soccer team, passing and shooting while tackling opponents and shoving them off the field in a chaotic, side-view playground brawl.
World Cup for the NES came out in 1990 from Technos Japan, the same folks who made River City Ransom. It was a time when sports games were starting to get a little more personality, moving beyond just basic simulations, and this one definitely had its own style.
You control a team of soccer players, but the main objective feels less like winning a match and more like surviving a playground scrap. You pass and shoot, but the real fun is in the shoulder charges and slide tackles that send opponents flying off the screen. The field is viewed from a side perspective, and the ball is almost secondary to the constant shoving matches. It's a fast, chaotic game where a clear shot on goal can be interrupted by a brutal takedown from behind. Playing it feels like being in a schoolyard argument that just happens to involve a ball.
