Game Overview

World Soccer came out for the Super Nintendo in 1991, developed by Imagineer. It was one of the early sports titles on the system, arriving before many of the more polished soccer games that would follow. It fit right into that initial wave of SNES releases, offering a straightforward take on the sport without a lot of the graphical or strategic depth that became common later.

You control a team of eleven players, moving the ball up the field to score goals against the opposing side. The main objective is to win the match, either against the computer or a second player. Signature mechanics include a simple passing game, a shot button whose power and accuracy are hard to judge, and slide tackles that are as likely to take out an opponent as give away a foul. The pacing is fast and a little chaotic, with matches that often turn into high scoring affairs because defending is so loose. It feels like a frantic, unpredictable scramble from kickoff to the final whistle.
