Game Overview

WWF King of the Ring for the Game Boy came out in 1993, developed by Eastridge Technology and published by LJN. It was one of the many wrestling games on the system, trying to capture the spectacle of the WWF in a portable format. The roster included recognizable names from that era, like Bret Hart and Yokozuna, each with their own set of moves and signature taunts.

You choose a wrestler and face opponents one after another in a tournament bracket, with the goal of becoming the King of the Ring. Matches play out in a side view arena; you punch, kick, and grapple, building up a special meter to unleash a finisher. The controls can feel stiff, and timing moves correctly takes practice, especially with the limited feedback on hits. Despite the clunky mechanics, there's a straightforward charm to working through the brackets and seeing your character crowned. It feels like a bare bones but earnest attempt to bring wrestling action on the go.
