Irem released X Multiply in 1989 as an arcade shooter, a time when side-scrolling spaceship games were everywhere. It didn't try to reinvent the wheel, but it definitely took a strange detour. Instead of flying through space or futuristic cities, you navigate the interior of a living organism, which was a bizarre and memorable shift from the usual sci-fi settings.
You control a small ship tasked with cleansing a biological system of hostile organisms. Your main weapon is a forward-firing shot, but the real standout is your pair of extendable, segmented "bit" tentacles. These appendages latch onto surfaces, acting as both shields and secondary weapons; they can block incoming fire or whip through enemies on contact. The levels scroll automatically, demanding quick reflexes as you dodge organic obstacles and patterns of enemy fire. It's a difficult game, with cramped spaces and attack angles that require careful positioning of your bits to survive. Playing X Multiply feels like conducting a frantic, precise dance inside a hostile, pulsing labyrinth.
