Play Yamato Online
You juggle two crosshairs—one for rapid anti-air fire, the other for slow ship-killing shells—while dodging torpedoes as enemy swarms fill the screen. Things get chaotic fast, especially when a buddy jumps in after you explode.

Yamato came out in 1983, an arcade game from Namco. It was part of that wave of space shooters where you sat in a cockpit cabinet, surrounded by booming sound and glowing buttons. The game drew inspiration from the famous battleship, but it played like a classic vertical scroller, with waves of enemy craft descending from the top of the screen. It felt right at home among the other quarter-munching machines of the era.
You pilot a lone fighter defending Earth from an alien fleet. Your ship has two firing modes: a rapid shot for taking out smaller enemy planes and a slower, more powerful cannon for destroying larger capital ships. You need to switch between them constantly as the screen fills with enemy fire and diving fighters. The challenge comes from managing both weapons while dodging torpedoes and missiles; it gets frantic quickly, especially in two-player mode when a friend can join after you lose a life. Playing Yamato feels like holding back a flood with your fingertips.
