Zippy Race came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1985, developed by Irem. It was one of those early racing games that felt a bit rough around the edges, typical for the time, but it had a clear and simple goal that kept you trying.
You control a small red car, driving from the left side of the screen to the right, trying to complete a cross-country trip. The main objective is to avoid all the other vehicles that swerve into your lane without warning. One crash sends you right back to the very start of your journey, no matter how far you had gotten. The screen scrolls in a choppy, segmented way, which makes judging distances a constant challenge. It feels like a test of pure reaction and patience, where every successful dodge brings a small wave of relief.
