You creep through alleys with a shaky pistol, then suddenly you're torching zombies with a flamethrower while their limbs ragdoll across the screen—NES horror at its jankiest and best.

Game Overview

Zombie Hunter came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1987, developed by Hi-Score Media Work. It was one of those late-era NES games that tried to push the hardware a little further, offering a darker, more violent theme than many of its contemporaries. You don't see many games from that time with such a direct focus on horror and survival, even if the execution was rough around the edges.

You control a lone survivor armed initially with just a pistol, moving screen by screen through a city overrun by the undead. The main goal is straightforward: survive, find better weapons like shotguns and flamethrowers, and clear each area of enemies. Two mechanics stand out: the way zombies sometimes break apart when hit with powerful weapons, and the constant, tense resource management of your limited ammo. The pacing is relentless, and the difficulty can feel unforgiving due to stiff controls and aggressive enemies. It feels raw and unpolished, but there's a grim satisfaction in holding a hallway with a well-placed explosive.
