The 7th Saga came out on the Super Nintendo in 1993, developed by Produce and published by Enix. It was one of those mid-lifecycle SNES RPGs that tried to push the hardware with its visual style and ambitious systems, standing out even among a crowded field of fantasy adventures.
You choose one of seven unique protagonists, like a knight or a demon, and then travel across a world map and through towns and dungeons presented screen by screen. Your main goal is to find seven runes before a group of rival adventurers, who are also hunting them and will challenge you to difficult fights if you meet. The combat is turn-based, and the game is known for its punishing difficulty curve, requiring a lot of grinding to survive later encounters. It feels like a tense, solitary race against opponents who are always one step ahead.
