I first came across A.S.O. on the NES back in 1987, a game put out by SNK. You pilot a lone fighter through horizontally scrolling stages, shooting down waves of enemy crafts and dodging their patterned fire. The main goal is simply to survive each stage and defeat the boss waiting at the end. A key mechanic is collecting power-up icons that cycle through different weapon types, like spread shots or lasers; grabbing one at the wrong moment can leave you stuck with a weak gun for a tough stretch.
