ActRaiser 2 is that rare sequel that completely reinvents itself—gone are the city-building bits from the first game, replaced with nothing but razor-sharp side-scrolling action. At first, I missed the sim elements, but after a few levels, the sheer intensity of the combat won me over.
You play as the same divine warrior, but now you’ve got way more moves—double jumps, mid-air dashes, and sword swings that feel weightier than before. The levels are these sprawling, painterly backdrops filled with creatures that look like they stepped out of a medieval nightmare. And those bosses? Huge, screen-filling monstrosities that’ll test your reflexes.
It’s hard. Like, really hard. But the music—this epic, choir-heavy soundtrack—keeps you pushing forward even after the tenth death. If you can handle the challenge, it’s one of the SNES’s most underrated action games.
