Age of Empires: Mythologies takes the classic RTS formula and shrinks it down for the DS, but don’t let the small screen fool you—this one’s got depth. You pick between Greeks, Egyptians, or Norse, each with their own gods, myth units (ever seen a frost giant stomp through a phalanx?), and wild god powers that can turn the tide of battle. The campaigns are meaty, bouncing you from Egyptian deserts to Norse frostlands, and the turn-based combat actually works better than you’d think on a handheld.

Early on, you’ll be juggling villagers gathering resources while trying not to get overrun by minotaurs or trolls—it’s a weirdly satisfying mix of city-building and chess-like tactics. The multiplayer’s a blast if you can find someone else with a copy, and there’s a ton of little achievements to hunt down if you’re into that. Just don’t underestimate those Egyptian priests—they heal units, and suddenly your opponent’s army won’t die.
