Play Air Fortress (Europe) Online
You blast through side-scrolling shooter sections, then land inside floating fortresses to explore maze-like interiors, hunting the core before oxygen runs out. That floaty jump takes practice, but cracking each fortress’s layout feels great.

Game Overview
Air Fortress is one of those weird, underrated NES games that mixes two totally different playstyles—and somehow makes it work. You start off flying through these side-scrolling shooter sections, dodging bullets and blasting enemies, but then you land inside these massive floating fortresses. Suddenly, it turns into this tense, almost Metroid-like exploration thing where you're searching for the core to blow the place up before your oxygen runs out.
The controls take a minute to get used to (that floaty jump still trips me up sometimes), but once it clicks, there's something really satisfying about figuring out each fortress's maze-like layout. And the music? Weirdly haunting for an NES game—especially the fortress themes. Just don't expect it to hold your hand; those later levels get brutal.
