Play Air Fortress (Japan) Online
You blast through clouds dodging enemy ships, then ditch your ride to sneak inside floating fortresses—crawling through ducts, hunting the core before the whole thing explodes. HAL nailed that mix of shooter adrenaline and tense exploration.

Air Fortress came out on the NES in 1987, developed by HAL Laboratory. It was one of those games that didn't get a lot of fanfare at the time, but it had a unique structure that set it apart from other space shooters and platformers on the system. You play as a pilot tasked with destroying a series of alien fortresses, and the game splits your time between two very different kinds of challenges.
You control a small ship, first flying through a side-scrolling shooter segment to reach a massive floating fortress. Once you dock, you leave your ship and continue on foot as a vulnerable astronaut. Inside, it becomes a methodical exploration game; you navigate room by room, avoid traps, collect energy orbs to power your limited shots, and hunt for the fortress core to destroy it. The tension comes from the self-destruct sequence you trigger, forcing you to retrace your steps and escape before the timer runs out. It feels like a careful, tense race against a clock you set yourself.
