Play Air Fortress Online
Pilot a ship through enemy fire, then navigate maze-like fortresses on foot to destroy cores before time runs out in this 1987 NES shooter-platformer blend.
Air Fortress came out on the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1987, developed by HAL Laboratory. It was one of those games that didn't get a huge amount of attention at the time, but it carved out a specific niche for players looking for something that blended two very different styles of play into one cohesive, and often stressful, experience.
You control a pilot whose mission is to fly a small ship into a series of giant alien fortresses. The game is split into two distinct phases. First, you navigate a horizontal shooter segment to reach the fortress entrance, dodging enemy fire. Then, you abandon your ship to proceed on foot inside the labyrinthine fortress itself, a side-view maze where you must find and destroy the core before the entire structure explodes. Your limited energy serves as both health and ammunition, forcing careful management, and the internal sections are tense, methodical crawls with a constant timer counting down. It feels like a race against your own dwindling resources as much as against the enemies on screen.
