American Gladiators on the NES came out in 1991, developed by Imagitec Design Inc. It was a time when licensed games based on TV shows were everywhere, and this one tried to capture the over the top athletic competition of the original series. You pick a contender and go head to head against the show's muscle bound stars in a series of minigames.

You control your chosen athlete through events like Joust, where you try to knock the gladiator off a platform with a giant q tip, or Powerball, where you grab balls and throw them into goals while being tackled. The main objective is to win each event and score enough points to advance to the final event, the Eliminator. The game moves quickly between events, but the controls can feel stiff and unresponsive, making some challenges more frustrating than fun. It feels like a clumsy, chaotic interpretation of the show's spectacle.
