Compete as a contender in American Gladiators on MS-DOS, tackle mini-games like Joust and The Wall, and try to outscore the AI gladiators in this retro challenge from 1991.
American Gladiators on MS-DOS came out in 1991, published by Imagexcel as part of their MS-DOS Classic Games lineup. It was one of those straightforward TV-to-game adaptations that tried to capture the over-the-top physical competition of the syndicated show, back when simple graphics and digitized voices were enough to sell the fantasy. You could tell it was made in an era where developers were still figuring out how to translate real-world action into something playable on a keyboard.
You control one of the contenders, competing in a series of events against the AI-controlled gladiators. The main goal is to outscore or outlast them in mini-games like Joust, where you bash each other with padded pugil sticks on a narrow beam, or the Wall, a timed race up a climbing surface while avoiding being pulled down. Movement is stiff, timing is unforgiving, and the physics feel unpredictable, which makes every successful hit or climb satisfying in a clunky, earnest way. It feels like a rough but sincere attempt to bring the spectacle home.
Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
