Arch Rivals: A Basket Brawl! came out on the NES in 1990, developed by Midway. It was part of that era where sports games started to get a little wild, mixing traditional rules with outright chaos. You could find it on shelves next to more straightforward basketball titles, but it never pretended to be a simulation.
You control a team of two players in a full court game, but the real goal is to beat up the other team as much as outscore them. Punches and shoves knock opponents down, letting you steal the ball; dunks are slow, exaggerated slams that feel powerful but leave you open. The referees occasionally call fouls, but they are rare enough that aggression usually pays off. It is fast, silly, and feels like causing trouble with a friend.
