Play Arle no Bouken - Mahou no Jewel (Japan) Online
Arle runs around catching goofy Puyo-style monsters in turn-based fights—like if Pokémon got hit by a cartoonish magic spell. The battles are simple, but there’s a weird charm in building a team of walking vegetables and blobs.

Game Overview
Arle no Bouken: Mahou no Jewel is this weird little Game Boy Color RPG where you recognize half the cast from Puyo Puyo, but suddenly they're running around catching monsters like it's Pokémon. You start with Arle (of course) and this little fireball creature, and right away you're thrown into these simple but surprisingly fun turn-based battles. The monster designs are goofy in that classic Puyo style—some look like walking vegetables, others are just blobs with faces.
What surprised me was how much it actually feels like an RPG, not just a Puyo reskin. You explore towns, talk to NPCs who say ridiculous things, and even get side quests. The monster collecting isn't super deep, but there's something charming about building a team of weirdos to fight other weirdos. Just don't expect modern quality-of-life stuff—this is pure late-90s handheld jank, for better or worse.
If you dig obscure spin-offs or just want to see Puyo characters in a completely different genre, it's a neat little time capsule.
