Game Overview
Army of Two: The 40th Day came out on PlayStation Portable in 2010, developed by Buzz Monkey Software and published by Electronic Arts. It was part of that wave of portable shooters trying to bring console-style co-op action to the PSP, a system that always felt a little hungry for deeper multiplayer experiences. The game drops you right into a collapsing Shanghai, and even on the small screen, the sense of urban chaos comes through.
You control one of two private military contractors, either solo with AI or with a friend via ad-hoc, working together to survive the disaster and uncover what’s behind it. The core loop is built around aggressive teamwork: flanking enemies for damage bonuses, combining fire on heavy targets, and using the Aggro system to draw enemy attention so your partner can move or revive you. You’re constantly scavenging for better weapon parts and cash, which lets you customize guns with wild combinations like gold-plated barrels or drum magazines. The pace is hectic, with environmental hazards and moral choices, like opting to rescue civilians or ignore them for personal gain, popping up under pressure. It feels scrappy and loud, a portable shooter that never lets you forget you’re in a fight for your life.
