I picked up Asphalt: Urban GT (J) back when the Nintendo DS was still fresh in 2004. Gameloft put this one out, and it was one of the early racers on the system, trying to make use of that dual screen setup. It wasn't trying to be a graphical powerhouse; it was just a solid, portable racing game for its time.

You control a selection of licensed cars, racing through city streets against a pack of AI opponents. The main goal is straightforward: win races, earn credits, and buy faster cars to dominate later events. The touch screen lets you manually shift gears by tapping icons, which adds a tactile layer to the driving. You also use nitro boosts collected on the track for sudden bursts of speed, and the drifting mechanic is essential for keeping your momentum through sharp corners. The pacing is quick, and the difficulty ramps up noticeably as you progress, demanding cleaner laps and smarter boosts. It feels responsive and a little rough around the edges, but nailing a perfect drift into a nitro straightaway is genuinely satisfying.
