Azure Dreams came out for the Game Boy Color in 2000, developed and published by Konami. It was part of that era where portable RPGs were experimenting with structure, moving away from purely linear stories. The game stood out for its blend of genres, something not every title on the platform attempted with such a mix.
You control a young man named Koh, whose main goal is to climb a massive, ever-changing monster tower that looms over his hometown. The gameplay is methodical; you explore the tower screen by screen, fighting monsters in simple turn-based combat, and the main draw is capturing those monsters to breed and fuse them back in town. The tower resets every time you enter or leave, so progress is about gathering resources and strengthening your monsters between attempts. It feels like a careful, long-term project where every failed climb still teaches you something useful.
