There’s a surprising amount of strategy too, with plays you can swap between mid-game, though I usually just spammed the "recommended" one and hoped for the best.

You can tweak everything from weather (rain turns the field into a slip ‘n slide) to whether players actually get tired (turn fatigue off if you hate realism). The team draft before exhibition matches is weirdly fun—nothing like watching the CPU agonize over picking a third-string punter while you snag all the good runners. It’s silly, but the kind of silly that makes you grin when your tiny QB somehow hurdles a defender twice his size.
