Football Champ came out in arcades in 1990 from Taito Corporation. It was part of that wave of sports games trying to capture the feel of the pitch with more speed and a bit more attitude than some of the slower, more methodical titles from a few years earlier. You could tell it was built for quick sessions, the kind of game you'd drop a coin into between other things.

You control a team of chunky, brightly colored players across a top-down field. The main goal is simple: outscore the other team before the timer runs out. A couple things set it apart. You can perform a sliding tackle that sends opponents flying, which is as satisfying as it is reckless. There's also a special shot you can charge up for a more powerful strike on goal. The pace is frantic, almost chaotic, and the computer opponents get noticeably more aggressive if you take a lead. It feels like a scrappy, unpredictable match where any loose ball could turn into a goal.
