Play Karate Champ Online
Fight as a karateka in Karate Champ, land strikes, perform techniques, and face off against friends or the computer in quick, intense matches on NES.
Karate Champ came out on the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1984, developed by Technos Japan. It was one of the early attempts to bring a one-on-one fighting game to a home console, arriving years before the genre really took off. You could feel the arcade roots in its design, a straightforward competitive experience built for quick matches rather than deep story modes.
You control a karateka from a side view, squaring off against either the computer or a second player. The goal is to land clean strikes or score points by performing specific techniques before your opponent does. The controls rely on using both the D-pad and buttons together to execute different moves, like high kicks or low sweeps, which feels a bit stiff but deliberate. Between fights, you get these strange bonus stages where you break bricks or, famously, dodge and attack a charging bull. The action is split across short, intense rounds, and the difficulty can spike sharply, especially against the computer. Itโs a game that feels both awkward and earnest, a product of its time thatโs still fun to pick up for a few rounds.
