Game Overview

Karate Championship came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1984, developed by Data East. It was one of the earlier fighting games on the console, arriving before the genre really took off with more complex titles. You get a simple, one-on-one karate match, no frills, just two fighters and a referee on a static screen.

You control a karateka and face off against either the computer or a second player. The main goal is straightforward: land a clean hit on your opponent before they hit you. Matches are quick, often decided in a single exchange. The controls use the D-pad for movement and two buttons for high and low attacks, punches and kicks. Timing is everything; mistime a move and you leave yourself wide open. The difficulty can feel unforgiving, especially against the computer, which reads your inputs a little too well. It’s a game of patience and split-second reactions, and winning a round feels like a genuine accomplishment.
