RealSports Football came out for the Atari 2600 in 1982, published by Atari themselves. It was one of the later sports titles for the system, trying to push the hardware a bit further with a more involved take on football. You could play against a friend or the computer, which was still a pretty big deal back then.

You control a team of small, blocky players, moving your quarterback around the field to avoid defenders. The main goal is to score touchdowns by either passing or running the ball. Signature mechanics include selecting plays from a menu before each down, and then executing them with a mix of directional movement and timed button presses for throwing. The pacing is frantic; players move in a herky-jerky fashion, and it's easy to lose track of the ball carrier in the scramble. It feels chaotic and simple, but there's a genuine thrill in breaking away for a long gain.
