Bakugan: Defenders of the Core came out for the Nintendo DS in 2010, developed by Now Production. It was part of that wave of tie-in games for the anime and toy line, aiming to capture the feel of the show on a handheld. The DS was still going strong then, with plenty of action titles vying for attention, and this one tried to stand out with its creature battling mechanics.
You control a human character who commands Bakugan creatures in turn-based arena fights. The main goal is to progress through various stages, defeating opponents to save Vestroia. Key mechanics include using the touch screen to physically flick your Bakugan marble into the battle zone, where it then unfolds into its battle form; you also input command codes during fights to execute special attacks. The pacing is fairly straightforward, though some boss encounters can ramp up the difficulty. It feels tactile and engaging when your throws connect just right.
