Play Bass Masters Classic on GBC Online
Navigate your boat, choose lures, and reel in big bass to win tournaments in this fishing game for the Game Boy Color.
Bass Masters Classic came out for the Game Boy Color in 1999, published by THQ. It was one of those late-era releases that tried to squeeze a console-like experience onto the handheld, joining a library full of platformers and RPGs with something a bit more niche. You don't see many fishing games on the system, and this one aimed to be a serious take on the sport.
You control an angler from a top-down perspective on a lake, moving your boat from one fishing spot to another. The main goal is to catch the biggest bass within a time limit to win tournaments. Key mechanics include selecting different lures from your tackle box to match conditions, watching a separate sonar screen for fish movement, and engaging in a rapid button-mashing sequence to reel in a catch once it bites. The pacing is slow and deliberate until a fish is on the line, then it becomes intensely frantic. It feels surprisingly absorbing for such a simple concept, making you focus completely on the rhythm of the cast and the tension of the fight.
