Pick England or Australia, then time your swings just right—mess up and you’re gone. DOS-era cricket where every boundary feels earned and every wicket stings.

Battle for the Ashes came out in 1995 as part of the MS-DOS Classic Games series, developed by Audiogenic Software Ltd. It was a cricket title from that era when sports simulations were still finding their feet on PC, offering a straightforward take on the Ashes rivalry without much flash or pretense. You got what you expected: a functional, no frills representation of the sport, aimed squarely at fans who just wanted to bat and bowl on their home computer.
You control either the English or Australian national team, taking charge of batting and bowling in turn. The main goal is straightforward: outscore your opponent or bowl them out within the limits of an innings. Key mechanics include timing your shots carefully when batting, where a mistimed swing often leads to a catch or clean bowled, and placing your deliveries when bowling, trying to exploit the AI's weaknesses. Matches move at a deliberate pace, and the difficulty can feel punishing if your concentration lapses; one bad over can swing the game entirely. It feels like a genuine test of patience and skill, where every run matters and mistakes are rarely forgiven.
Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
