Turn-based strategy game with hex-grid combat. 16 single-player missions, 16 two-player battles. Terrain affects movement, diverse unit types with progression. Split-screen system for simultaneous planning. Released 1991 for Amiga.
Battle Isle on the Amiga is one of those classic turn-based strategy games that somehow still feels fresh. You're dropped onto Chromos, a planet where the Drullians are desperately fighting Skynet-Titan (yes, that name aged interestingly). The hex-based maps give you this satisfying tactical depth—forests slow you down, mountains block paths, and positioning actually matters when you're trying to flank enemy units.
What I love is how the split-screen works: while you're moving your tanks and infantry around, the other player (or AI) is already plotting their counterattack. Battles resolve between turns, so there's this tense back-and-forth where you're never just waiting. And your units actually improve over time if they survive fights, which makes losing a veteran soldier genuinely painful.
There's a solid chunk of single-player missions, but the real magic happens in two-player mode. Nothing beats outmaneuvering a friend's army just to watch their best unit get wrecked by your ambush in the hills. The whole thing has that '90s strategy charm—simple to learn, but the terrain and unit matchups keep you second-guessing every move.
