Game Overview

Beethoven's 2nd: The Ultimate Canine Caper came out on the Super Nintendo in 1993, published by Hi Tech Expressions. It was one of those many licensed games from that era, based on the movie about the big, slobbery St. Bernard. You knew what you were getting into with these titles; they were rarely groundbreaking, but they had their own simple appeal, especially if you were a kid who loved the films.

You control Beethoven himself, navigating through side scrolling levels that mostly involve construction sites and suburban neighborhoods. Your main goal is to find and rescue all of his stolen puppies, which means you'll be doing a lot of searching screen by screen. You bark at enemies like squirrels and pesky humans to stun them, and you carry puppies carefully in your mouth to bring them to safety. The controls feel a bit heavy and slow, which fits the big dog but can make some jumps frustrating. It's not a long or complex game, but there's a silly satisfaction in successfully herding all those puppies home without dropping them.
