Play Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon R on Snes Online
Control Sailor Scouts, fight through stages, defeat bosses, and collect moon symbols to power up your magical attacks in this colorful side-scrolling adventure.
I picked up Sailor Moon R on the Super Nintendo back in 1993, a game developed by Angel and published by Bandai. It was one of those many licensed titles that tried to capture the magic of the anime on the 16-bit console, a time when every popular show seemed to get its own side-scrolling adventure. The box art was bright and colorful, promising an afternoon of magical girl action.
You control one of the Sailor Scouts, moving from left to right through themed stages, punching and kicking your way through waves of cartoonish enemies. Your main goal is to reach the end of each level and defeat the boss, all while collecting crescent moon symbols to power up your special attacks. The combat is simple but satisfying, letting you unleash screen-filling magical attacks that drain a meter you refill by gathering items. The game can feel a bit repetitive and the difficulty spikes sharply at the bosses, but there's a genuine charm in seeing the show's transformation sequences and hearing its music recreated in chiptune. It feels like playing through a condensed, slightly clunky episode of the cartoon.
