Blackthorne (Endless Piracy) (E) is one of those GBA games that feels like a forgotten gem. It's a side-scrolling action platformer where you play as Kyle, returning to his home planet to fight Sarlac's forces. The first thing you notice is how weighty the movement feels - Kyle lumbers around with purpose, and that shotgun has a satisfying kick when you fire.
I remember getting stuck early on because I didn't realize you could actually backflip away from enemies while shooting. The levels are these maze-like fortresses where you're constantly searching for keys or figuring out which generator to blow up. Sometimes you'll just sit behind cover, waiting for the right moment to pop out and blast an enemy before ducking back.
What surprised me was how dark the tone is for a GBA game. There are these little moments where Kyle can execute wounded enemies point-blank, and the pixel art really sells the grim atmosphere. The puzzles aren't too complex, but they make you stop and think between all the shooting.
