You pick your favorite characters—Ichigo, Rukia, even Urahara if you're feeling sneaky—and duke it out across two planes, jumping between foreground and background like the anime fights. The spirit energy gauge is key: fill it up, and you can unleash flashy specials that look ripped straight from the show.
What makes it stand out is the card system. Between matches, you build a deck that lets you buff your attacks or mess with your opponent mid-fight. Swiping through cards on the touchscreen feels a little chaotic at first, but once you get the hang of it, pulling off a well-timed debuff feels awesome. Four-player WiFi battles get properly chaotic, though good luck finding matches these days.
Story mode follows the Soul Society arc, but the real replay value comes from survival and challenge modes—especially when you're trying to beat your high score with weird card combos. It's one of those DS fighters that still holds up if you dig the manga's vibe.
