Bloody Roar: Primal Fury came out on the Nintendo GameCube in 2002, developed by Eighting and published by Hudson Soft. It was part of that early wave of GameCube fighters, a time when the console was still building its library and every new 3D brawler felt like a fresh test of the hardware. This one stood out immediately, not for being a technical showcase, but for its one very loud, very furry gimmick.
You control one of several fighters, each with a human form and a powerful beast form. The main objective is to win one-on-one matches by depleting your opponent's health bar, either through standard combos and throws or by building up your beast gauge to transform. The signature mechanics are the transformation itself, which grants new moves and super armor; the ability to smash opponents through certain arena walls into new fighting areas; and a counter system that rewards well-timed blocks. The pacing is fast, almost frantic, and the difficulty can spike sharply against certain characters who exploit their beast forms effectively. It feels chaotic and unpredictable, a game where any match can turn on a single, well-timed transformation.
