Breath of Fire III came out on PlayStation in 1997, developed and published by Capcom. It was part of that wave of mid-90s JRPGs that really leaned into deep worldbuilding and turn-based combat, back when the genre was still defining its conventions on disc-based consoles.

You control Ryu, a young boy with the power to transform into dragons, and travel with a shifting party of allies who each bring unique skills to both combat and exploration. Your main goal is to uncover the mystery behind the disappearance of the dragon clan, which involves navigating towns, interacting with NPCs, and delving into multi-level dungeons. Two standout mechanics are the Master system, where characters apprentice under various mentors to learn new abilities, and the dragon gene system, which lets you combine different transformations for custom draconic forms in battle. The pacing is deliberate, with plenty of side content and occasional difficulty spikes in later dungeons. It feels like a thoughtful, hands-on adventure where your choices in building the party really shape how you experience the world.
