Game Overview

Breath of Fire III is one of those RPGs that sticks with you—partly because of its moody, almost melancholic atmosphere, and partly because of how weirdly charming its world is. You start as Ryu, a kid with dragon blood who gets freed from a mine and suddenly has to figure out why his kind was wiped out. The story unfolds slowly, but in a good way, like peeling back layers of an old myth.

What I love is how each character feels distinct—Teepo’s reckless, Rei’s a sarcastic thief, and Nina’s… well, she’s just trying her best. Their abilities actually matter in puzzles and fights, so you can’t just brute-force your way through. And then there’s Ryu’s dragon transformations—mixing genes to create different forms is oddly satisfying, even if half of them look like someone glued wings to a potato.

The Master System’s neat too—you apprentice under different mentors who tweak your stats in weird ways. Want Rei to hit harder but lose defense? Go train with some hermit in the woods. It’s janky in that very ‘90s RPG way, but it gives the game this rough, handmade feel. The PSP port’s solid, though the load times can drag a bit.

It’s not the flashiest RPG out there, but there’s something about its grimy, lived-in world that makes it worth revisiting.
