Game Overview

Breath of Fire: Ryuu no Senshi (or just Breath of Fire if you're not in Japan) is one of those GBA ports that actually gets it right. You play as Ryu—not that Ryu—a guy who can turn into dragons mid-battle, which sounds ridiculous until you're desperately morphing into a fire-breathing monstrosity to wipe out some smug bandits.

The pixel art holds up surprisingly well, and the turn-based fights have just enough strategy to keep you on your toes. I spent way too long figuring out which dragon forms worked best against certain bosses (hint: don't sleep on the ice dragon). Also, Nina—the party's resident winged thief—steals everything that isn't nailed down, which is both hilarious and occasionally inconvenient.

It's got that classic JRPG vibe: kidnapped sister, ancient prophecies, and a weird old man who probably knows more than he's letting on. If you miss the SNES era but want something you can actually finish during a commute, this is it.
