Game Overview

I picked up Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon for the Game Boy back in 1993, a time when licensed games were a real gamble. It was developed by Angel and published by Bandai, and it felt like a typical side-scroller for the handheld, nothing too ambitious but clearly made for fans. You could tell they were aiming for that early 90s anime game vibe, straightforward and a bit rough around the edges.

You control Usagi Tsukino, who explores Tokyo screen by screen, transforming into Sailor Moon to battle monsters called Youma. The main goal is to rescue your fellow Sailor Scouts, who are scattered across the city. You jump across platforms, use a basic but distinct attack for each character once they're unlocked, and collect items to restore health. The pacing is slow, and the difficulty can spike unexpectedly in later stages, but pushing through those clunky controls gives a real sense of accomplishment. It feels like a genuine, if flawed, attempt to bring the show's charm into a playable form.
