Play Breath of Fire (U)(Mode7) Online

You play as Ryu, turning into dragons mid-battle while trekking across a surprisingly big GBA world—just watch out for those random encounters. The pixel art towns and weird party members (like a fish guy) make the grind feel less tedious.

Game Overview

Breath of Fire on the GBA is basically a portable version of the SNES classic, and it holds up surprisingly well. You start off as Ryu (not that Ryu) in a typical JRPG setup—your village gets wrecked, and now you’re off to save the world. The combat’s turn-based, but what makes it stand out is the dragon transformations—mess around with those early, because they’re way more fun than just whacking enemies with a sword.

The overworld feels huge for a GBA game, and the pixel art still looks great, especially the towns. Some of the random encounters get a little tedious, but the music and the weird party members (a fish-man? Sure, why not) keep it interesting. It’s definitely old-school, so expect some grinding, but if you’re into classic RPGs, this one’s a solid pick.
