Radical Dreamers came out on the Super Nintendo in 1996, developed by Square. It was a late release for the system, a text-heavy adventure that felt experimental even then, more like an interactive novella than a typical action RPG. It was a side story to Chrono Trigger, but it stood on its own with a moody, atmospheric style that didn't rely on big sprites or complex mechanics.
You control a trio of thieves: Serge, Kid, and Magil. The goal is to infiltrate Viper Manor and steal the Frozen Flame. Movement is screen by screen, with navigation handled through simple menu selections. There's no traditional combat; instead, you face timed choices during encounters that can lead to evasion, dialogue, or a quick, decisive action. The story branches based on these decisions, and characters can permanently die if you choose poorly. The pacing is deliberate, almost tense, because every interaction feels consequential. Playing it feels like stepping into a ghost story where your own choices write the ending.
