Play Bubsy Online

Bubsy’s this hyper bobcat who slides around levels like he’s on roller skates, bouncing off enemies and spouting one-liners while you try not to faceplant into UFOs. The speed’s ridiculous, the yarn obsession makes no sense, and somehow it’s a blast once you stop crashing into everything.

Game Overview

Bubsy came out on the Sega Genesis in 1993, published by Accolade. It was part of that wave of early '90s platformers where every developer wanted a mascot to compete with Sonic and Mario, and this one definitely had its own flavor, for better or worse.

You control Bubsy, a bobcat who runs fast and collects balls of yarn scattered through each stage. The main goal is simply to reach the end of the level without dying, which happens a lot thanks to instant-death pitfalls and enemies that take you out in one hit. His signature moves include a high, floaty jump and a clumsy pounce attack that never feels quite reliable. The pacing is frantic, almost slippery, and the difficulty can feel cheap rather than challenging. Playing it is a mix of frustration and odd amusement, especially when Bubsy spouts a random quip after biting the dust.
