Game Overview

I first played Cannonade back in the mid-90s, when it came out as part of the MS-DOS Classic Games collection from Apogee Software. It was a simple artillery game, the kind you'd find on many computers at the time, but it had a certain charm that made it stand out. You'd just load it up, pick your difficulty, and get straight into lobbing shells at your opponent across a destructible landscape.

You control a stationary cannon at the bottom of the screen, taking turns with an AI opponent perched on the opposite side. Your main goal is to destroy the enemy cannon before it destroys you. The core mechanics involve adjusting your angle and power for each shot, while also accounting for wind speed and direction that can push your projectile off course. The terrain is fully destructible, so a well-placed shot can carve out craters or even bury your foe under falling earth. The pacing is methodical, almost puzzle-like, as you calculate each attempt; the difficulty ramps up quickly as the wind gets stronger and the landscapes more extreme. It feels deeply satisfying when you finally land that perfect hit after several near misses.

Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
