Chicken Run came out on the Game Boy Color in 2000, published by Eidos Interactive. It was one of those many licensed games from the era, a time when you could find a game for just about any movie, and this one was based on the Aardman film. You play as Ginger, the lead hen from the movie, trying to organize a great escape from Tweedy's Farm.
You control Ginger directly, moving her through the farm's various locations screen by screen. Your main job is to rescue all the other chickens trapped in each area. The gameplay involves a lot of item use; you pick up things like buckets and ropes to solve environmental puzzles, often to disable one of Mrs. Tweedy's contraptions or to safely guide another chicken. You also have to avoid the farm dogs patrolling the grounds, which adds a constant layer of tension. The pacing is deliberate, focused more on figuring out what to do with your limited tools than on quick reactions. It feels like a careful, thoughtful puzzle where one wrong move sends the dogs after you.
