Chip's Challenge (Proto) is an unreleased NES version of the tile based puzzle game, developed by Epyx and later published by Nintendo. It belongs to the era of the NES when puzzle games often emphasized logic and precision over action, fitting comfortably alongside titles like Adventures of Lolo or Fire 'n Ice. This particular build never saw an official cartridge release, existing only as a prototype.
You control Chip, a student navigating a series of isolated puzzle screens. The main objective is to collect all the computer chips in a level to unlock the exit door. Signature mechanics include pushing blocks to create paths, avoiding or using enemies like the fireball shooting balls and the patrolling bugs, and navigating hazards such as force floors and water. The pacing is deliberate, and the difficulty is steep, demanding careful observation and planning. It feels like a test of patience and foresight, where every move matters.
