Dodge waves of enemy fire in your transforming Valkyrie, switching between flight modes mid-battle to outmaneuver screen-filling bosses. Those pixel explosions still hit just right when you pull off a desperate last-second dodge.

Choujikuu Yousai Macross: Scrambled Valkyrie came out for the Super Nintendo in 1993, developed by Winkysoft. It was part of that wave of licensed games that tried to capture the feel of an anime, in this case the Macross series, without just being a lazy cash-in. The SNES had plenty of shooters by then, but this one stood out for how it handled its source material.
You pilot a VF-1 Valkyrie, a fighter that can transform between three modes: a fast jet for covering distance, a battroid for precise ground combat, and a hybrid gerwalk for tricky maneuvering. The main goal is to survive through side-scrolling and overhead stages, blasting enemy mecha and dodging intricate bullet patterns. Key mechanics include managing your transformation to suit the terrain and threats, and using a limited supply of screen-clearing missiles for when things get too crowded. The pacing is aggressive, and the difficulty is no joke, especially later on when enemy fire fills the screen. It feels like a constant, tense dance between evasion and aggression, where a single mistimed transformation can end your run.
