Congo's Caper came out on the Super Nintendo in 1992, published by Data East. It was part of that wave of early SNES platformers that tried to stand out with a unique character and some interesting mechanics, rather than just being another mascot clone. You play as a little chimpanzee named Congo who gets turned into a boy by a magic spell, and your goal is to rescue your girlfriend from an evil wizard.

You control Congo through a series of side-scrolling levels, using a basic attack with a club and a rolling move to plow through enemies. The main objective is to collect enough rubies in each stage to open the exit, while also hunting for a magic potion that temporarily transforms you into a super-powered version of yourself. The pacing is pretty quick, and the difficulty can spike unexpectedly, especially in later stages with more enemy patterns to learn. It feels like a straightforward, energetic platformer that doesn't overcomplicate things but still asks for your attention.
