Game Overview

Conquest of the Crystal Palace came out on the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1990, developed by Quest and published by Asmik. It was part of that wave of late NES action games that tried to do a little more with the hardware, offering a fantasy setting with some light exploration and a companion character, which wasn't all that common at the time.

You control a young swordsman named Farron, moving screen by screen through a large, interconnected palace. Your goal is to defeat the evil sorcerer Zaras and reclaim the Crystal Palace. You use a basic sword attack, but the real standout is your dog Zap, who you can command to attack enemies independently or fetch items for you. There's also a shop system between stages where you spend collected gems on health upgrades and temporary power-ups. The pacing is deliberate, with some backtracking, and the difficulty can spike unexpectedly in later areas. It feels like a methodical, slightly quirky adventure where your success often hinges on managing both your own movements and Zap's helpful interventions.
