Pokemon Liquid Crystal is a fan made ROM hack for the Game Boy Advance, built on the engine of Pokemon FireRed. It was developed by a creator known as LinkandZelda, and it represents the kind of ambitious, unofficial project that flourished in the GBA era, expanding on the familiar foundations of the official games.
You control a young trainer beginning a journey across the Johto and Kanto regions, with the eventual goal of challenging the Pokemon League. The game remakes the experience of Pokemon Crystal, but it introduces features like a running shoes mechanic from the start, a more detailed day and night cycle, and the inclusion of the Sevii and Orange Islands as post game areas. The pacing is brisk, and the difficulty feels slightly heightened compared to the original, especially with gym leader teams that are better equipped. It feels like revisiting a well worn map only to find new trails cut through the old forests.
