Pokemon Liquid Crystal is a fan made hack of Pokemon Crystal for the Game Boy Advance, developed by LinkandZelda. It was released as a free download, not an official cartridge, and it reimagines the Johto and Kanto regions with a more vibrant color palette and a host of new features that take advantage of the GBA's hardware.
You control a young trainer starting their journey, and your main goal is to collect eight gym badges, defeat the Elite Four, and eventually challenge the Kanto league. The game incorporates the day and night cycle from the original, which affects which Pokemon appear in the wild, and it adds new areas to explore like the Orange Islands. Battles feel quicker, and the level curve is adjusted to provide a consistent challenge without excessive grinding. It feels like revisiting a familiar world that has been thoughtfully expanded and polished.
